Skyros - sights
Chora or Skyros village is amphitheatrically built on the top of a hill, in the shadow of the medieval castle and the Byzantine monastery of Saint George. Chora impresses the visitor with its architectural style, white Cycladic cube houses with their yards full of flowers, byzantine churches and the narrow stone paved streets. The historic Monastery of Saint George built on the top of Chora's rock, offers a breathtaking view along the long sandy beach of Magazia. A little lower, near the archaeological museum, is Brook's square honoring the philhellene British poet Rupert Brook who died and was buried in Skyros. The large bronze statue of Rupert Brook (1887-1915) symbolizes his eternal poetry. Here you can enjoy the sunset and the amazing view of the Aegean sea and the towns Magazia and Molos. Hosting two museums, byzantine churches, shops and public services, restaurants and bars, Chora is considered as an interesting tourist spot especially in the summer. |
